Knowles Statement on House Budget Vote
Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Schuykill) issued the following statement on the spending plan being sent to the governor for his signature:
“I am deeply disappointed in the budget bill that passed the House. Since this process began, I have said that state government must live within its means and that the budget cannot increase taxes on Pennsylvania families and businesses. This bill does not accomplish either of those goals. It spends too much, and to pay for it, it requires a $1 billion tax increase.
“I could not vote to impose that kind of tax increase on my constituents when a sensible, no tax alternative is available. At $27.5 billion, the budget plan offered by House Republicans would have spent less than the plan that passed the House and it would have fully funded state servcies without increasing taxes.
“We simply cannot continue spending more money than we have and then asking taxpayers to make up the difference. This budget increases taxes on Pennsylvania families so the governor can spend the money in Philadelphia.
“For those reasons, I opposed this budget.”
