With the state and national economies still struggling to recover from the worst economic recession in generations, Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Schuylkill) recently hosted a forum with local businesspeople to discuss economic issues including improving the local job climate and what role state government should play in helping employers recover.
“Pennsylvania is starting to show the early signs of recovery from this recession, but we are not out of the woods,” said Knowles. “Clearly, what has been done up to this point has not worked. Despite our best efforts and hundreds of millions of dollars of so-called stimulus spending by the federal government, our unemployment rate is still near 10 percent and many employers are reluctant to start hiring again. I hosted this forum to discuss the impact the economy is having on our area and to hear suggestions on how state government can best help move us toward a solution. What are we doing well? Where do we need to improve?”
The forum, which was held in Hamburg, included Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) as well as representatives from local labor unions, the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce, the Berks County Workforce Investment Board, and local business leaders.
Knowles encouraged anyone with an idea on how to improve the state’s economy to call his district office at (570) 668-1240.
