Biography for Rep. Jerry Knowles
124th Legislative District, Berks/Carbon/Schuylkill Counties

Representative Jerry Knowles represents the 124th Legislative District, which includes portions of Berks, Carbon and Schuylkill counties. Knowles, a Schuylkill County native, is currently serving his fifth term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

For the 2017-18 legislative session, he was selected to serve on the following House committees: Appropriations, Judiciary, Professional Licensure and State Government.

As state representative, Knowles is focused on the following key issues: 

• Eliminating the school property taxes placed on Pennsylvania’s homeowners.
• Controlling government spending.
• Improving Pennsylvania’s business climate to ensure we retain job-creating businesses and attract 
  new ones.
• Withholding state funding from Pennsylvania institutions of higher learning that deem themselves 
  sanctuary campuses.
• Recruiting and retaining volunteer emergency service personnel in our communities.
• Reducing the size of the House of Representatives.

Knowles has spent most of his adult life in community service to the people of the 124th District. He served as a police officer and later as a borough councilman and mayor of Tamaqua. In addition, he spent six years as a Schuylkill County commissioner and more than 10 years on the staff of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and as director of special projects for former Rep. Dave Argall.

In addition to Knowles’ professional endeavors, he has served his community. Currently he participates in the annual Carbon-Tamaqua American Cancer Society Telethon and is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2711, Tamaqua South Ward Fire Company, Tamaqua Lions Club and Tamaqua Elks Lodge 592.

A lifelong resident of Schuylkill County, Knowles is a graduate of Marian Catholic High School and is also a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens Trade School in Lancaster.

Knowles and his wife, Lorraine, currently reside in Rush Township. They have two sons and two grandsons.
