HARRISBURG – Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Schuylkill/Berks/Carbon) and Sen. David Argall (R-29) announced Hamburg Area School District received over $10,000 in a Farm to School Grant administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
The Pennsylvania Farm to School Grant Program provides schools with funding to improve access to healthy, local foods and increase agriculture education opportunities for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
“This funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture assists our schools to improve access to local healthy foods,” said Knowles. “I am pleased to see the Hamburg Area School District receive these funds to benefit our students.”
“This competitive funding will boost the Hamburg Area School District’s efforts to educate their students about one of Pennsylvania’s most important industries - agriculture,” said Argall. “Giving young people the opportunity to learn about this part of Berks County’s economy is very important.”
The program aims to bridge the gap between children and the food system by connecting them to the fresh, healthy food available from Pennsylvania agricultural producers in their community and the surrounding areas. Through changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early childhood education sites, children will become more aware and engaged with their local food system as well as empowered to leverage their own consumer influence to support Pennsylvania agriculture.
